IAS Exam Success: This Guys from NAVODAYA did it - so can you

                Ten days after making the grade, Vinod's eyes still well up every time his illiterate father talks to visitors or telephone callers about his son's hard won success in clearing the Indian civil services exam.

                 Every time the retired unskilled labourer Janardan praises his son - an MBBS doctor who will now be an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer - for his perseverance and toil, the grateful son says his success is nothing compared to the backbreaking labour his father put in all his life to educate his sons. 

With his parents in their thatched house in village Visapur near Chandrapur, 160 km from here, Vinod Bahade recalls all his yesteryears - in the Zilla Parishad school in his village, then the Navoday Vidyalaya in Talodhi Balapur nearby, and then the junior college in the bigger colliery township of Ballarpur .

"As I pored over my books in dim lantern light every night, my father would say he would do anything to see me become a doctor or an engineer. I wondered where he was going to bring the money from for my education," Vinod reminisced.

"When I actually passed my school exam with marks enough to secure admission to a medical college, my father, who was a labourer in BILT (Ballarpur Industries Ltd) sought voluntary retirement and reserved his Provident Fund for my education," Vinod told IANS with an unmistakable lump in his throat.

Even while studying medicine, Vinod did not entirely give up the idea of becoming an IAS officer (that he had toyed with while in junior college) though he thought he could serve the society as a doctor as well.

"But the stark poverty and backwardness I saw as an intern in the rural hospital in Narkhed (in Nagpur district) and as a medical officer in Jimalgatta, an inaccessible tribal village in Gadchiroli district, firmed up my resolve to operate on a larger canvass. I started preparing for the civil services exam," he said.

Vinod passed the prelims and mains in the very first attempt in 2004 but lost out by a whisker in the personal interview.

In the second attempt, which he could take only after another stint as an medical officer, he failed again but persevering still, he had yet another go at it - and was through this time.

Gratefully acknowledging the valuable guidance he received from the P.N. Rajbhoj Institute for IAS Coaching, run by a retired bureaucrat Mumshilal Gautam in Nagpur, and the government IAS coaching centre in Mumbai, both meant for poor and backward class students, Vinod says the time has come to repay the debt.

Question over Navodaya Entrance Test -Which said to violate the RTE Act..

         JNV Schools were first to hit by Right to Education Act.RTE act mandates that there should be no screening or entrance exam for admissions in the exams.Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), is said to be the first one to violate this rule.


         National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) posted a notice to NVS for holding an all-India entrance test earlier this year for admission to 500-odd Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalyas.
NVS.NCPCR is looking for an explanation, worst case NVS will need to look for exemption of itself from RTE act.
                           
                शिक्षा के अधिकार कानून में रोक के बावजूद प्रवेश परीक्षा के जरिए नवोदय विद्यालयों में दाखिले पर राष्ट्रीय बाल अधिकार संरक्षण आयोग भले ही सख्त हो गया हो, लेकिन नवोदय विद्यालय समिति इस मामले में पीछे हटने को तैयार नहीं है। उसने दो टूक कह दिया है कि नवोदय विद्यालयों में दाखिले की इस प्रक्रिया में बदलाव संभव ही नहीं है। इतना ही नहीं, उसने सरकार से भी कह दिया है कि नवोदय विद्यालयों को शिक्षा का अधिकार कानून के दायरे से बाहर रखा जाना चाहिए।

                     प्रवेश परीक्षा के आधार पर नवोदय विद्यालयों में हुए दाखिले पर राष्ट्रीय बाल अधिकार संरक्षण आयोग [एनसीपीसीआर] का नोटिस मिलते ही नवोदय विद्यालय समिति ने अपना जवाब भी उसे भेज दिया है। समिति के आयुक्त मनोज सिंह ने एनसीपीसीआर को साफ कर दिया है कि 75 प्रतिशत ग्रामीण और 25 प्रतिशत शहरी बच्चों की दर्जनभर अलग-अलग श्रेणियों के तहत नवोदय विद्यालयों में छठवीं कक्षा में होने वाले इन दाखिलों के लिए प्रवेश परीक्षा के अलावा दूसरा रास्ता अख्तियार ही नहीं किया जा सकता। उन्होंने कहा है कि दाखिलों में अनुसूचित जाति, जनजाति, लड़कियों, शहरी और ग्रामीण जैसी श्रेणियों के साथ ही हर जिले के नवोदय स्कूल की सभी सीटों को ब्लॉक स्तर तक बांटकर प्रतिनिधित्व दिया जाता है।

                 आयुक्त का कहना है कि नवोदय विद्यालयों में छठवीं कक्षा की कुल 38 हजार सीटों के लिए लगभग 16 लाख बच्चे प्रवेश परीक्षा में बैठते हैं। मतलब एक सीट के लिए औसतन 42 आवेदक होते हैं। इन स्कूलों की स्थापना का उद्देश्य सभी समुदायों के प्रतिभाशाली बच्चों को सामान्य पढ़ाई से अलग गुणवत्तापूर्ण शिक्षा मुहैया कराना है। ऐसे में यह संभव ही नहीं है कि नवोदय विद्यालयों में दाखिले के लिए आवेदकों में से औचक चयन किया जाए, जैसा कि शिक्षा का अधिकार कानून में प्रावधान है।

                        इस बीच, नवोदय विद्यालय समिति ने मानव संसाधन विकास मंत्रालय को भी पत्र लिखकर इन स्थितियों के मद्देनजर नवोदय विद्यालयों को शिक्षा का अधिकार कानून के दायरे से बाहर ही करने की मांग कर दी है। गौरतलब है कि एनसीपीसीआर ने पहली अप्रैल से लागू हुए इस कानून के प्रावधानों को नजरअंदाज करने पर उससे हफ्ते भर में न सिर्फ जवाब तलब किया है, बल्कि नवोदय विद्यालयों में हुए दाखिलों को रद करने का भी निर्देश दिया है। ऐसा न होने पर उसने कार्रवाई के लिए भी चेताया है।

Success in Civil Services, JEE fires Navodaya Vidyalaya schools

                             With 16 of its alumni having made it to the Civil Services this year and another 152 having cracked the IIT-JEE, the government-run Navodaya schools have set their aim higher, at a figure of 10,000. Tying up with coaching institutes and tutorial centres, the chain of 560-plus Jawahar Navodaya schools spread across the country plans to help that many of its Class XII students clear national- and state-level competitive entrance examinations annually.

Under the new scheme tentatively christened ‘Mission-Ascribed Career’, the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) will chart out everything from coaching to loans at concessional rates for its students.

The 16 alumni who cleared the UPSC Civil Services exam made it to the Indian Revenue Service and Indian Forest Service, apart from other allied services.

                  If some cleared the IIT-JEE, other students secured admission to regional engineering colleges through high scores in the AIEEE and other examinations. Still others cleared medical entrance exams to prestigious collegesSet up in the 1980s, Navodaya schools aim at providing quality modern education to talented children, predominantly from rural areas.

                    With Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal putting his weight behind the scheme, the aim is to get at least 10,000 students to clear either national-level or state-level entrance examinations, which will guarantee them admission to professional courses, say sources.

             “Besides partnering with coaching centres essentially for a free training module for Navodaya Class XII students, progressive discussions are on with the Union Bank of India to help with funding if students do secure admission to these courses. With 20,000 students in Class XII across all Navodaya Vidyalayas, aiming at a 50 per cent admission score is quite do-able,” said a senior officer.While in 2007 the NVS signed an MoU with NGO Dakshana Foundation to provide free Internet-based IIT-JEE coaching to its students, this time they are getting into partnerships with many more such institutes, like Narayana Educational Institutes. Also keen to make a mark in the PMT exams, the NVS is in discussions with Delhi-based Akash Institute.

From Farm of MP to Cancer Lab - A succes story of Navodian Girl.

A Girl from JNV Hoshangabaad Joined the Cancer Lab,Malaysia Here goes the story being published in the Hindu...

Anita Tilwari (32) is in Malaysia, researching on medicinal plants for curing
cancer.
Having overcome two handicaps — of being a Dalit and a woman — she won a
government of India fellowship for research at the Institute for Research in
Molecular Medicine, University Sains Malaysia, Kelantan, north Malaysia.
She also heads a Malaysian delegation to promote awareness about science.
Anita grew up watching her parents till the field and do menial jobs in Alampur,
Harda district in Madhya Pradesh. (Her parents still work as labourers in Bhopal.)
Anita’s elder sister did not go to school and the younger one gave up studies after
class VII. Both were pushed into early marriage. Anita, however, is unmarried.
She did her graduation and post-graduation in biotechnology and microbiology at
Barkatullah University, Bhopal, and later got a doctorate in the same field from the
Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (University of Technology of Madhya
Pradesh, Bhopal).

She got the Young Scientist Award in 2005 (from the state government) for innovation in the field of science.

“She was good in studies and one of her teachers in the village spotted her potential and sent her to a NavodayaVidyalaya. This was the turning point in her life,” said her mother, Shanta Bai (55).

Anita has been able to shape the careers of her two younger brothers. One of them, Tulsi, teaches physics, chemistry and mathematics in a government school in Sagar (north-central Madhya Pradesh) while the other, Valmiki, is in the final
year of electronics and communication engineering at Rewa Engineering College (north-eastern Madhya Pradesh).

Valmiki said: “I aim to become an IAS officer. And I will work hard for it.But all this would not have been possible without the untiring efforts of my elder sister.”

Strong Showing by JNV Dakshana Scholars at IIT-JEE 2010!! 90 Scholars Have Qualified in the IIT-JEE

Dakshana’s Topper, T. Ashok Kumar, Secures an IIT-JEE All-India Rank of 63!

The Dakshana Foundation is pleased to announce that its second batch of JNV Dakshana Scholars came through with flying colors and did exceedingly well in the IIT-JEE 2010.

A total of 293 Dakshana Scholars were prepped for free by Dakshana for two years. Of these 90 qualified in the IIT-JEE merit list. Last year, Dakshana’s first batch of scholars took the IIT-JEE and 75 (out of 350) scholars cracked the IIT-JEE – a success rate of 21%. This year that success rate has increased to 31%.

Dakshana’s topper was T. Ashok Kumar from Ranga Reddy district in Andhra Pradesh. Ashok secured an IIT-JEE All-India rank of 63. Ashok Kumar’s father is a tailor with typical monthly income of under Rs. 3000 ($64). For the first time, Dakshana had three students in the Top 500 IIT-JEE ranks including Rajiv Krishna of Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh with an IIT-JEE All-India Rank of 87.

Less than 3% of the nearly 500,000 students who attempted the IIT-JEE were successful. Dakshana had a hit rate of 31% – with 90 of the 293 scholars being selected. “It is all the more remarkable because we are still very new at all this. I am grateful to the JNV system, Dakshana’s staff, volunteers and IIT-JEE coaching service provider partners for these incredible results. We had many shortcomings and we hope to do even better in the years ahead,” said Mohnish Pabrai, Dakshana’s founder.

The foundation has a strong relationship and Memorandum of Understanding with the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya system (JNVs) whereby Dakshana screens and selects the most promising JNV students for intensive preparation and coaching for the IIT-JEE.
